Singapore Overview

Singapore appears as a dot on any world map at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, link to the Asian Continent by a man-made causeway over the Straits of Johor. Singapore land area is always a changing figure due to land reclamation from the sea, it is roughly the size of Isle of Man, about 600 Sq KM. A form British colony gotten it's independence in 1965.

Major ethic groups: Chinese 75%, Malay 15%, Indian 8%, Others 2%. Total population 4 millions including 1 million foreign working here. 80 miles north of the Equator it is summer all year round with temperature between 23 to 33 degree Celsius.

Getting Around

Getting around Singapore is extremely easy due to it's small size and efficient public transport system. EZ-link card can be purchased at all MRT stations and it can be used on the MRT and all public buses. If you intend to use the public transport (buses, MRT) to explore Singapore it is highly recommended that you purchase the Singapore Tourist Pass S$8 per day unlimited trips, available at the following MRT stations: Changi Airport, Bugis, Raffles Place, City Hall, Harbour Front and China Town.

Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) metro services that span the whole island. It has 3 interlinked lines:

North South Line: Starts from Marina Bay via Orchard Road to Woodlands near the Malaysian border than to Jurong East Station.

East West Line: Starts from Changi International Airport to Boon Lay Station at the west end.

North East Line: Starts from Harbour Front Station near Sentosa via China Town and Little India to Punggol Station at the north end.

Fares starts at S$0.66 to S$1.90

Public bus services cover the whole island to supplement the MRT bring commuters to the exact destinations. Fare ranges from S$0.65 to S$1.58

Taxi fares are metered, flag-down fare ranges from S$2.80 to $3.20, surcharge may also be applied during peak hours, holidays and special location like airports. Subsequent charges are base on distance traveled (about S$0.2 per 400 Meters).
