Orchard Road, as the name suggested was an area covered with nutmeg and pepper plantations in the 19 century as can be seen on this 1890 postcard on the right, it is the now the most popular shopping district in Singapore as the Fifth Avenue is to New York. Along the main thoroughfare are lust tropical trees, and behind those trees lay many glitzy shopping malls filled with practically everything under the sun.
Locate at the western end of Orchand Road is the Singapore Botanic Garden , founded in 1859. Inside this beautiful garden lay trees as old as the garden and as high as 50 meters, with circumference measuring 7.8 meters. It was also here in 1877, that the first rubber tree was first introduced to South East East from South America, eventually making Malaya the largest rubber producing country. Among 3000 spieces of trees and shrubs you can also fing a cafe, a resturant, some lakes, lots of birds and other small animals in the garden.
At the other end of Orchard Road lies the National Museum. Within this 120 years old neoclassical architecture are state-of-the-art multimedia exhibits design to bring history to life.
